Custodian of all Town records, responsible for active files, storage and disposition of inactive records and archival material. Maintains records of adopted Town Ordinances and Local Laws, Town Oaths of Office, resignations, petitions, proof of publications, annual budgets, assessment rolls, fiscal reports, notices of lien, subpoena and court actions, bonds/notes registers, zoning ordinances and maps.
Administrator of the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL), which guarantees your right to know the workings of government. If you wish access to a particular record you may submit a FOIL Request Form to the Town Clerk (put form on-line). Your request for a record must reasonably describe the record and reason for obtaining it.
Within five (5) business days of receipt of the request, the Town Clerk must either make the records available, deny access in writing giving the reason for denial, or furnish a written acknowledgement of the request and tell you when the record would be available. There is a charge of 25 cents per page for each copy up to 9x14 inches. Larger copies and audio or video copies will be charged at the actual cost of production.
If your request is denied (FOIL exceptions), you may appeal to the Town Board within thirty (30) days of the denial. Upon receipt of an appeal the Town Board must render a decision with ten (10) business days.
