Senior Citizen Club

If you are 50 years of age or older, you are eligible to join our active Senior Ctizen Club. Meetings are held at 11:30 am on the second Tuesday of the month at the North Salem Fire House. Seniors are asked to bring their own bag lunch; club members provide dessert and coffee. At 12:30 pm the Business Meeting begins followed by a speaker and announcements of upcoming events, trips, etc. For more information call Muriel Bisulca at (914) 669-5662.
 
Some of our events this year have included: Visit to the Buddhist Monastery, Meet-and-Greet with the Candidates, earring making, Irish Dancers, Penny Social, food drive, Educated Palate Luncheon, AARP Defensive Driving course, Westchester Broadway Theatre, speakers from our local town offices, 90th Birthday Party picnic and music, and much more!

2019 Meetings & Events
  • January 8 - Meeting. Karen Futia (North Salem Tax Assessor) will tell us about the changes to the STAR Programs. We will also be providing lunch. Plan to stay to play Bingo.
  • January 18 - Luncheon at Tilly’s Table.
  • February 12 - Meeting. Celebrate Valentine’s Day.
  • March 12 - Meeting. St. Patrick's Day Party - Dancers from O'Sullivan's Irish School of Dance and speaker from the Ruth Keeler Memorial Library Program Committee.
  • March 29 - Defensive Driving course, North Salem Firehouse. It begins at 9:00 and runs for 6 hours with a break for lunch which we will provide. The cost is $20 for AARP members (bring your card) and $25 for non-members. Successful completion of this course provides a 10% reduction, for three years, in the base rate of the motorist's current automobile liability, no-fault and collision premiums.  Motorists who complete this course are also eligible to receive point reduction once in 18 months.
  • April 9 - Meeting. Earring workshop.
  • April 11 - Trip to BOCES Educated Palate Spring Luncheon in Yorktown Heights.
  • May 14 - Meeting. The Superintendent of NS Schools, Dr. Freeston, will present the school budget. Plan to stay after the discussion for our Penny Social.
  • May 16 -  Trip to the Buddhist Monastery in Carmel.
  • June 12 - Annual Senior Citizen Installation Luncheon at Chuck's Steak House in Danbury, CT. Reservations required.
  • August 14 - 90th Birthday Picnic at North Salem Fire House to honor our seniors that are 90+.
  • September 10 - Meeting. Speaker from the North Salem Tax Assessor's office and North Salem Police Department.
  • September 26 - Trip to Fascia's Chocolate Factory in Waterbury, CT and lunch.
  • October 16 - Trip to Brotherhood Winery in Washingtonville, NY.
  • November 8 - Trip to Westchester Broadway Theatre to see "An American in Paris."
  • December 11 - Annual Holiday Party at Primavera Restaurant & Bar.

April begins our nominating process. Please consider running for an office. We will select a nominating committee in March; would you like to volunteer for this important job? The committee is responsible for presenting the nominees in April. We will vote in May with installation in June. 

Other Programs for Seniors

Senior Citizen Nutrition Program

The Somers-North Salem-Lewisboro Nutrition Program, for residents 60 years of age and over, is held at Wayne Van Tassel Memorial Park, Route 139, Somers.  It provides lunch Monday through Friday at Noon. Lunch reservations MUST be made one day in advance by calling (914) 232-0807 between 10:30 am and 1:30 pm.  The suggested contribution is $2.00.

Senior Citizen Van

The Senior citizen van runs to the Nutrition Program site on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  If you would like to be placed on the pickup list call Program Director, Barbara Taberer, at (914) 232-0807 for more information.

Senior Home-Delivered Meal Program

If you are a Senior 60 years old or over, and are unable to get to the meal program at the nutrition site due to health reasons, we may be able to help out by delivering a hot meal to your home. We will also set up a meal plan for you. A menu and your first meal will arrive the next day.  This service is available to all Somers, Lewisboro and North Salem Seniors. Call Program Director, Barbara Taberer, at (914) 232-0807 for more information and reservations.

There is a suggested donation of $2 per meal for this program, which is partially funded by the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services, and the Towns of Somers, North Salem and Lewisboro.

F.I.S.H.

"Friends in Service Here" is a group of concerned neighbors who offer non-emergency rides to those who have no other means of transportation, primarily to doctors' appointments, clinics and hospitals. This free service can be obtained by calling (914) 669-5082 and speaking with the coordinator, Kathleen Sullivan.  Also, if you are able to help by driving ambulatory neighbors one or two days a month, please give Kathleen Sullivan a call.
